How are 220 students organised in Year 8?
There are more than 200 students in each year group. Students are placed into 2 pathways during Key Stage 3. These are called the PLUS and CORE pathways. Students are placed into classes in Year 8 after consideration of all the information we have available.
The PLUS classes follow a more demanding Scheme of Work and would usually would aim to get the top grades A*,A and B at GCSE Maths.
The CORE classes follow a Scheme of Work that would usually aim for the Grade C,C* and B.
At regular stages, the performance of each student is monitored and and their class placement is confirmed or changed. The aim is to have all students placed in the appropriate class to be challenged, enjoy and succeed in their Maths.
At the end of Year 10 decisions are made which GCSE pathway is most suitable for each child. This decision is based on performance in classwork, assessments and examinations during Year 10 and the teacher's professional judgement.

Homework and Assessment
Homework and assessment are very important to enable students to perform at their best. Staff have high expectations and track each student’s results through the years. We always aim to place a student in a class of appropriate level.

From P7 to Key Stage 3 to GCSE to A Level Maths
We start building upon the Maths knowledge and skills they have developed throughout primary school. Year 8-10 are important years when students begin looking at topics that will be of great value to them during the GCSE years.
During Years 11 and 12 students are entered for CCEA GCSE Mathematics. Those who struggle with Maths study the Essential Skills Application of Number course. Very able mathematicians are also selected to study CCEA GCSE Further Maths or GCSE Statistics.
Every year a class of high achieving students embark on the 2 year CCEA A Level in Mathematics. This course includes Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. Students who have studied A Level Maths usually go on to study a variety of courses at University including different Engineering courses, Financial, Computing, Medical and Scientific degrees.
